Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: First-Person Shooter

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

Deus Ex
HλLF-LIFE²
HλLF-LIFE
Resident Evil 4
BioShock
HλLF-LIFE²: Episode Two
GoldenEye 007
Metroid Prime
Borderlands 2
BioShock Infinite

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

...How the hell is Resident Evil 4 here? It's not first-person.

Also, this list has another of the three games that make up my "unholy trilogy" of the absolute worst crap that has ever emerged from this medium (Bioshock: Infinite, in this case). Seeing 2/3rd of that list on "top 10" lists is enough to really shake one's faith in humanity.

Like the shooter list, the first person shooter list has too many games that just so happen to have shooting actions.

I like these games, but not because they are shooter.

Where are the team fortress, COD, counterstrike, quake, doom, arma, unreal tournament, HALO, etc that make up the real first person shooter genre?

About the only FPS game I've played is Wolfenstein 3D. I have one of the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare games for the DS, but I could never get past the tutorial.

FTFY.

But in all seriousness, you're right. About half that list is RPGs or adventure games that have guns and a first person camera. And as Cynical says, RE4 isn't first person. Never played it, but isn't it third person with some sort of "over the shoulder" view for shooting?

Really surprised nothing by id features, considering the impact they made on the genre with... you know, one or two wee games they released somewhere in the 90s...

And here I was prepared to bore everyone to death with aimless rambling about Doom!

I've had a peak at most of these gathered lists and they all have a number of games a normal gamer would never classify under their current headings. I'm not volunteering, but someone needs to re-visit them!
Thank God Half Life 3 isn't on the list, you can literally complete the game firing only one bullet and it's still called a first person shooter?!

Still play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 online with my son.
Loved Wolfenstein: The New Order. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is installed, but not played yet.
Also started with Battlefield 1, great! And looked at my son playing Battlefield V -looks great too.

Haven't played any of the top 10 listed and no intention to do so.

Maybe one result of these genre posts is to show what games are out of place. I've just submitted a correction for RE4.

Though both Half-Life games are listed so I'm happy with this list.

Doom (1993) and Doom II: Hell on Earth are 264 and 221 overall (31 and 27 in the FPS rankings). I guess people that play them now may rate them lower as they're comparing them to modern FPS games?

Metroid Prime was the first FPS that I actually enjoyed. My all time favourite is Borderlands 2. The addition of RPG style things like quests and character progression are almost mandatory for me. The last straight forward FPS I played and liked was the new DOOM, because it catered to my play style. The newer Wolfenstein games on the other hand are not my cup of tea.

What makes a good FPS game?

I have played a number of linear FPS like COD4:MW, COD:IW, MOH2010, Resistance1-3, Titanfall2, HL2+1+2. I actually really like the linear style. Sometimes simplicity is enjoyable.

I've never been interested in multiplayer, that's a whole different genre to me.

I've also liked some non-linear shooter-RPG hybrids like Metroid Prime Trilogy, Borderlands 2, Mass Effect Trilogy (third person), Fallout4.

Shooting things is a surprisingly effective basis for a videogame.
