Just to promote some discussion for the fun of it, I thought I'd do a series of forum posts based on the 53 genres listed in VGG.* Here's a GeekList of all 53 threads.

This thread's genre: Action Adventure

Listed below are the top-ranked games in this genre. How does the list fit with your experience?

Have you played any of these games? Which ones? Do you agree or disagree with the ranking? How would you rank the games listed? Are there other games in the genre that you think should be in the top ranks?

And by the way, what do you think of this genre in general?

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Red Dead Redemption
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
Mass Effect
Metal Gear Solid

*In case you don't know how to find the VGG genres and rankings, hover over Browse at the top of the screen, then click Genres. Click a genre, and scroll down to Linked Items. Click the Sort window, and sort by Rank.

Brave: A Warrior's Tale and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy are big hits with me. Let`s just say, I wouldn`t mind if they were reproduced for PS4 sometime soon. I had the PS2 versions, and my aunt and I loved playing through them.

That also goes for the Harry Potter franchise. 1,2,3 and 5 were well played in my PS2 days.

I play this genre occasionally. I've only briefly played A Link to the Past (and Four Swords). I enjoyed the Bioshock series, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Odd how some RPGs are listed here, but not in the Action RPG category.

Not even Zelda!!? surprise That's totally worth a play. I saw it was recently in the news with the discovery of it's "minus world". Zelda is a classic. The franchise gets even better (well, not #2, yuck) as you play thru the different titles. You should give it a try one weekend.

I need to give the Uncharted series a go. Been wanting to for awhile.

The one and only game in that--uh, franchise? (is that what it's called?) that I played is The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Played it all the way through on my Nintendo DS Lite.

It was amusing. I kinda cheated, though: I had a "strategy guide" (a printed book) that I followed along with. But at one point I managed to do better by going with my own idea instead of doing what the guide said.

I've played quite a few different action adventure games.

Some of my favorites:

Darkened Skye
Bastion - I do think this is more action adventure than action RPG, though it is listed as both.
Terraria - Honestly, Terraria is a little bit of a lot of genres.

I've only played 1 of the games in the top 10.. Batman Arkham Asylum... which is one of my all time favourite games... other games that are classified in this genre that I've enjoyed include Batman : Arkham City (just outside the top 10).. Tomb Raider, All the Lego Games.. and probably a host of others.

This genre in particular seems much broader than many others.

Arkham Asylum is a truly fantastic game. Purely entertaining. Shadow of the Colossus is also a blast. The intimidation of seeing those giant beasts combined with the satisfaction of bringing them down makes for a great experience.

It's curious how BioShock is categorized as an Action Adventure, while Dishonored is an Action RPG. (Both great games, btw.)

"Action Adventure" is probably one of the most nebulous genre names in gaming. It encompasses a lot of different styles of gameplay, though Zelda-like games are probably the best barometer for what an Action Adventure game is kind of like. An RPG-ish game with action, exploration, and some kind of adventure to follow that doesn't have to be totally linear, but gives you some good direction. Or something like that.
