Armchair warriors often fail, and we've been poisoned by these fairy tales.

So it was an arcade game I saw between 1984 and 1988.
It scrolled mostly side to side, possibly up& down. Side view like Double Dragon or Final Fight, not top-down like Gauntlet.
1 or 2 player.
I think you were going up a wizard's tower.
You controlled a hero: Barbarian, Amazon ... others
On the levels there were other heroes locked behind gates, you could rescue them, and they'd shadow behind you also attacking. You might have been able to switch which hero was primary and secondary.

It wasn't Altered Beast or Golden Axe.

Was the attacks more like projectiles?
Like there was one guy who would throw a small axe that would go back to his hand?
And there was this big enemy guy in his loins that would have a steel ball connected to a chain and he would swing it above his head slowly?
I remember this game but forgot how it's called.

Welcome to the site.

Some were melee sword/axe, other were projectile (arrow/spell). I don't remember the proportion, or commonality between them.

Not that I remember.

That Sounds like Golden Axe or Final Fight or possibly Street Fighter (not Street Fighter II).

IIRC unlike Golden Axe, you didn't have 3D movement on a plane; it would be more ladder/platforms/stairs like Castlevania. The gates that held heroes would also be used to change areas/levels.

The game did use joysticks instead of trackballs or other fancy controllers. It also had buttons but I forget how many per player.

Sounds like Capcom’s Magic Sword. A fun game, the henchmen and the leveling up aspect made it feel like a pseudo-RPG.

Also it’s where I learned the word “falchion.”

Magic Sword does look plausable, but now I'm wondering where I saw it. Another gameplay image in its gallery would hopefully help.
