two weeks ago we have a VGG Council discussion on company merges

here is a reply from Ncik

Quote:
I do not think the two companies should be merged. They were originally separate entities, and need to retain the visibility of such in our system otherwise it messes up our historical data. If they merge and become a new company with a new name, it should get a new company entry.

To me this is no different to Square and Enix merging to create Square Enix. I would not want to merge the two old companies just because they became one at a later date,

I think Ncik states the problem clearly

Coolio - I was going to post a response here, but you've just saved me a lot of time. thumbsup

In my mind, if a company has gone by separate names through its own historical rebranding, that's a worthy discussion point for "one company entry / multiple names". Company merges, acquisitions and other combinations shouldn't mean the companies get merged here.

What is the current policy?

Judging from my experience with the database, the "current policy" is do what appears to work for each individual situation.

Bob has come up with one way of approaching this problem - as have numerous other mods and submitters. Each approach has up sides and down sides.

What needs to happen is that the various ideas need to be discussed and then a final, officially articulated policy can be created. At that point database entries can be "fixed" in accordance with that policy.

Right now I think that good "fixes" are being rejected as the result of the lack of a clear policy on company names.

from the Wikipedia entry on Titus Software, it appears they later became Titus Interactive

I will not merge these, I did edit the descriptions of both entries
I also added a link in each to the other entry

after reading the Wikipedia page, I see references to other Video Game companies

in the admin email group we have started to discuss how we should handle these

Please merge the Commodore 64 game Asylum II

With the entry for Asylum II

These are the same game. Since the original Asylum was never released on the C64, the C64 version of Asylum II was simply called Asylum.

Also, the Genre "Text Adventure" included on the C64 game should not be retained this is a "graphic" adventure.

Came after this one:

Genpei Tōma Den

Highlighting the need to ensure we get alternate titles in with "plain" characters to help head off duplicate submissions like this...

D'lorted.

Now, I'm a little confused about these ones:

I meant to ask you about this before but I lost the thread.

The information for the game Asylum is incorrect? It says on the game page that it was released for the C64. Can you clarify?

Sure - trying to describe this is a bit of a "who's on first", so let me try and clarify it with a time line.

Chronologically, things went like this:

1. A game called "Asylum" is released on the TRS-80, but not on the C64.

2. A sequel, "Asylum II" is released on the TRS-80.

3. "Asylum II" is ported to the C64, but because it is the first series entry for that platform, it is simply titled "Asylum."

The current video game entry for "Asylum" (C64) is a port of "Asylum II" (TRS-80) where the primary differences between the two titles are due to platform capabilities (black and white block graphics on TRS-80, color pixel graphics on C64). So the C64 game should be a release under Asylum II, not a new video game entry.

There is a similar precedent involving a racing game series for the Amiga that was not ported to the PC until the third entry in the series - so the Amiga title Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge and the PC title "Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge" are combined into a single video game entry.

Don't see this too often:

Game 118893: [thing=118893][/thing]
Game 118894: Winning Run '91

Duplicates to be combined. Looks like someone hit submit twice, but not sure how they both got approved!
