Definitely interested in getting into this game but the basic tile-set is just not tenable. Can anyone recommend the best graphical overlay? Looks like there are a ton, would appreciate your opinion.

Obsidian looks nice.

I suggest starting off with the Lazy Newb Pack and using one of the two tilesets included. I'm pretty sure I'm using Phoebus which is solid and readable. Another benefit of the LNP is that it has Dwarf Therapist embedded right in it (along with the game itself and the tilesets).

And yeah, when I first started, I thought the Therapist wouldn't be necessary, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong!

Also, the Quickstart guide in the DF wiki was super helpful for me.

Seconded. Lazy Newb Pack (and I've been playing for years) is so much easier to deal with. Dwarf Therapist is mandatory. I also use Phoebus and find that it works great.
