Monster Hunter 2 was not released outside Japan. However, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 - a game based on its content, did receive an international release. "Monster Hunter 2 is a PlayStation 2 game made by Capcom, and the sequel to Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter G. Monster Hunter 2 was only released in Japan because the Monster Hunter series had only a small cult following elsewhere in the world, while being huge in Japan.
Monster Hunter 2 has an improved weapon tree and upgradeable armors. As in all Monster Hunter games, armor pieces can be worn to obtain skills and abilities. A new feature in Monster Hunter 2 is the use of gems. Gems add skill points to complement those added by armor and weapons. Gems are created by combining ore and/or monster parts. Gems can be attached and detached from armor and weapons that have special gem slots. New features include day and night changes, seasons, and New weapon classes: Long Sword, Gunlance, Hunting Horn, Bow.
