Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is the fourth game in the Ultima series by Lord British, aka. Richard Garriot, and the first game in The Age of Virtue Trilogy. It is considered by many to be the greatest CRPG ever made. Doinig away with standard CRPG fare of destroying the big bad at the end of the game, Ultima IV instead is a quest for enlightment, completing the Quest of the Avatar and becoming a spiritual paragon for the people of the renamed Sosaria, Britannia to look up to. Introducing a more complex spell casting mechanic using reagents, the game follows a similar mechanic to the previous Ultima games, a top down icon based view for above ground and a more advanced 3D step based engine for dungeons.
Many years have passed since the defeat of Exodus by the Hero from Another World. Sosaria had been devastated following Exodus' passing and the sinking of the Isle of Fire. Lord British has gathered the disparate city states together to form the new empire of Britannia. As a guiding influence, he with the Great Council has formed the eight virtues; Honesty, Compassion, Valour, Justice, Sacrifice, Honour, Spirituality and Humility for the people to live up to. However a guiding light is needed. The Hero from Another World is called forth once again to embark on the Quest of the Avatar and become the embodiment of virtue.
