Ultima IX: Ascension is the final game in the Ultima series by Lord British, aka. Richard Garriott. While heavily criticised by long-term fans for it's linearity, basic plot, and general buginess, it never the less uses arguably the most beautiful and detailed 3D game engines of its time.
Following the Avatar's escape from Pagan, he finds himself in a Britannia truly under the oppressive yoke of the Guardian. Eight columns have risen high into the sky from the eight Britanninan dungeons, causing the citizens of Britannia to act against the system of virtues. Lord British is a shadow of his former self, and the Avatar's companions are nowhere to be found. Joining forces with the pirate Raven, the Avatar must destroy the columns and prepare himself for his final showdown with the Guardian.
