Rockman EXE WS is a platforming title in the Battle Network series. It combines many gameplay features from the original Mega Man series with the story and events of the Battle Network series.

Players control Megaman.EXE, a NetNavi tied to Lan Hikari, and attempt to destroy viruses unleashed by WWW. Stages are set up as side-scrolling dungeons filled with pits, spikes, and enemies. Megaman can get aid from Lan, however, in the form of Battle Chips. Each Battle Chip provides a one-time special power, but players need to keep track of their connection meter – if the meter drops too low, Megaman cannot connect with Lan, and his help line will be cut off.
