Sakuya is a kodama (wood sprite) that resides within the sacred tree Konohana in kamiki village. She has lived in Konohana since it was planted 100 years ago by Mr. Grapefruit and is connected to the guardian saplings that grow across Nippon, protecting the land through them. The weaker Sakuya gets the more clothing she wears while at her strongest has incredibly scant clothing. Sakuya also seems to loose her ability to hover as she weakens.
When Orochi’s seal was broken he spread a curse across Nippon that nearly killed Sakuya but she used the last of her strength to awaken the sun goddess Amaterasu who had previously bested the beast a hundred years earlier. With an offering of the Reflector Amaterasu awoke from her slumber and set out across the land dispelling the curse and restoring the guardian saplings.
Sakuya holds the highest respect and admiration for Amaterasu with constant praise and offerings of whatever help she can lend. She tolerates Amaterasu’s friend and guide Issun who repeaditly rubs her the wrong way. In Ōkamiden she adores Amaterasu’s son Chibiterasu but doesn’t seem to hold him in the same high regard as Ammy. Issun also seems to treat her with more respect and authority almost as a ‘boss’ type figure.
