Tama is a pipe smoking, nocturnal, pyrotechnic with a strong passion for fireworks living in Shinshu Field. He wears his kimono improperly and sleeps during the day so he can test his fireworks at night. Tama hosts the fireworks for the Kamiki Festival every year but after the yearly festival ran into an "artist’s block" but was inspired by Amaterasu’s brushwork.
In Okamiden Tama is found severely ill in his home and in need of herbs from Dr. Redbeard. The two have a bitter grudge towards one another after Tama unintentionally insulted Dr. Redbeard by using his herbs to add color to fireworks. They make up when Tama’s "colorful" fireworks bring happiness to the sick girl Ayame who could not be cured with herbs.
Tama's name and the kanji written on his kimono are a reference to Tamaya (house of jewels/spheres) which was a great firework-making guild in Edo (modern Tokyo) during the 19th century. The Tamaya guild was disbanded in 1843 after it accidentally burnt down half of the city. The guilds name is still commonly invoked in modern Japan with the traditional firework-viewing exclamations "Tamaya!".
