Janus Hassildor is an imperial noble and has been the count of Skingrad for many years. He is rarely seen in public and widely known as a powerful wizard which the public uses to explain his long life and believe him to just be crowd shy.
Hassildor is actually a vampire and avoids the public to try and hide his condition. Despite this he expresses a strong hatred of other vampires, calling them ‘animals’ and has any that take up residence in Skringrad eliminated as they are both a threat to his people and draw in vampire hunters who ask unwanted questions.
Hassildor and his wife Rona became vampires fifty years ago and his wife never accepted her changes, refusing to feed and slipped into a coma. Hassildor wishes to finally give her peace and sends the player to find Melisande who is the only person who knows a cure for vampirism. After the cure is given and Rona dies Hassildor expresses relief that she no longer suffers.
The Mages Guild suspecting Janus Hassildor of having joined in with the Necromancer’s Cult falsely sends the player to retrieve a book from him and to act as an unknowing spy.
Hassildor’s steward Mercator turns out to be a necromancer and lures the player outside Skingrad at night to dispose of them but Hassildor shows up to help the player fight them off and reveals he knew of Mercator being in the cult but didn’t want to act without knowing who his allies were. He then chews the player out for being so gullible and berates the guild for it’s lack of faith in him.
He later offers valuable information to the Mages Guild about Manimarco’s return but refuses to tell them until they do something for him first. Vampires and vampire hunter’s are causing trouble for him in Skingrad and they need to be eliminated but he can’t risk anyone knowing about his condition so someone else will have to dispose of them.
"Whatever you may think of me, I still protect my own. This is my city, and Mehrunes Dagon will not have it while I remain Count of Skingrad."- Janus Hassildor (Oblivion Crisis)
"Mehrunes Dagon has no more love for my kind than for my mortal subjects. Less, perhaps, as we make poor slaves." - Janus Hassildor (Oblivion Crisis)
"Despite what your Council may think, I've not thrown in with the Necromancers, and would never do so. Tell your Council that the next time they want something from me, they come themselves. They don't send someone under false pretenses." - Janus Hassildor (Mages Guild)
"I assure you, I am not responsible for them. I would never be so careless. Where there are mindless animals, predators are never far behind. This is not the first time such a thing has happened, however. On some level, they’re aware of my presence. Whether they covet all that I have, or simply wish to see it destroyed, I do not know. They have given in to their instincts, and are little more than animals. They need to be exterminated, one way or another." - Janus Hassildor (vampires in Skingrad)
"The Count of Skingrad is not all he seems. Let's just say I'm not the only one who enjoys his evenings." -Vicente Valtieri
