Hired as the chief of security for biotech company Sarif Industries, Adam Jensen lives in a world where society is deeply divided on the issue of human augmentation: the usage of prosthetics and similar technologies to not only replace what one has lost, but to extend a person's physical and mental capabilities—in effect creating a form of Nietzsche's Übermensch. Unsure of augmentation himself, Jensen nevertheless accepts employment at Sarif Industries. Just before a seemingly routine trip to make the case for augmentation on Capitol Hill, Sarif headquarters is subjected to a terrorist attack, leaving Jensen severely injured and near death. Only through the judicious use of augments is a medical team able to save him. It is in this physically augmented state that Jensen, and the player, begin unraveling the mysteries of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
