User Summary

Alistair is the bastard son of King Maric, half-brother to King Cailan, and a dim-witted, playful, and compassionate Grey Warden. His mother, a serving maid died giving birth to him and was raised by Arl Eamon Guerrin of Redcliffe on the advice of his friend Teyrn Loghain Mac Tir in an attempt to hide Alistair’s existence from Queen Rowan.

This caused the arl's wife, Arlessa Isolde to suspect that Alistair was Arl Eamon’s son and insisted that Alistair at age 10 be sent to the chantry. Arl Eamon came to visit him occasionally but Alistair hated it there and blamed Eamon for everything which resulted in an end to his visits. Alistair was trained by the chantry to be a Templar which is where he learned most of his skills but was later deemed to be ill suited to religious devotion.

He was not the best fighter and easily bested by Templar’s such as Ser Eryhn, Ser Talrew, and Ser Kalvin one of the finest blades in Ferelden but despite this Duncan recruited Alistair because he sensed Alistair had a good heart and admired his character and personality. Duncan used the Warden’s ‘Right of Conscription’ to force the Grand Cleric to hand Alistair over before he took his ‘Sacramental Vows’. This enraged the Grand Cleric who cared little for Alistair but hated the Warden’s and did not wish to give them anything.

Alistair takes being a Grey Warden seriously informing the newest Warden of the sacrifices they make and willing to do whatever it takes to end the blight even if it involves doing something or taking responsibility he desperately wishes to avoid. Alistair holds family and friends dear such as saving Arl Eamon’s and Arlessa Isolde despite the way he had been treated by them. He is overjoyed to learn he has a half-sister named Goldanna and desperately wishes to meet her but is disappointed by her aggressiveness and resentment towards him. Alistair views Duncan as a surrogate father and is devastated by Duncan’s death becoming emotional whenever the topic is brought up.

During the Landsmeet it is possible for Alistair to become king ruling by himself, with Anora, or with a female Human Noble Warden. However if the Warden accepts Riordan's advice to let Loghain undergo the ‘Joining’ Alistair will leave the party for good despite his loyalty to the Grey Wardens claiming he can’t "call that man a brother" but can be persuaded to marry Anora. If he demands Loghain's execution and has not married Anora she will call for his execution to secure the throne. The Warden can intervene saving his life by having him exiled or allow Alistair to die.

He appears briefly in Dragon Age II accompanied by Bann Teagan while having a confrontation with Meredith regarding mages who had fled to Ferelden. If he was in a relationship with a female Human Noble Warden he’ll refer to her as the "the old ball and chain." And if he was in a relationship with a female Warden but married Anora, Teagan will comment that "you-know-who" will be arriving back from a mission to which Alistair comments that they best not tell Anora. If he was exiled in Origins he’ll appear at the Hanged Man in Kirkwall as a drunk whining about his misfortunes which gains the attention of Bann Teagan who tells him that he can now return to Ferelden.

Character Quotes:

"Just so you know, if the king ever asks me to put on a dress and dance the Remigold, I'm drawing the line. Darkspawn or no." -Alistair

"That's what I'm here for. To deliver unpleasant news and witty one-liners." -Alistair

"Injured! As in me, as in Ow! Have you ever licked a lamp post in winter?" -Alistair

"Yes, but she seems more... "Ooh, pretty colors!" than "Muahaha! I am Princess Stabbity! Stab, kill, kill!" -Alistair (On Leliana)

"Yes, that's right! Watch as I thrash our enemies with the mighty power of floral arrangements! Feel my thorns, darkspawn! I will overpower you with my rosy scent!" -Alistair (presenting rose to female Warden)

"What? Lead? Me? No, no, no. No leading. Bad things happen when I lead. We get lost, people die, and the next thing you know I'm stranded somewhere without any pants." -Alistair

"We now have a dog and Alistair is still the dumbest one in the party." -Morrigan

Trivia:

When asked to compare a set list of NPC companions to food BioWare employee Cori May said that Alistair was most comparable to "strawberries and cream, sweet and wholesome and delicious, and a little goofy." While writer Sheryl Chee says "Alistair is an apricot. Cute, sweet and just a little fuzzy."

Writer Sheryl Chee has said that when going out for a drink Alistair would "have half a pint and giggle uncontrollably for the rest of the night."

In writing Alistair, David Gaider was inspired by Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly.

The name Alistair means "Defender of the People" or "One who holds off the enemies".

Alistair seems to have a persistent fear of mages turning him into a toad.
