Description Edit | History

Qurupeco is a large Bird Wyvern monster first encountered in Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii.

Physically Qurupeco resembles a large Pterasaur with a combination of brightly coloured scales and feathers along with a prehistoric but bird-like appearance. It has a bright red throat sack that puffs out when the Qurupeco is angry or calling out. Its beak is also unusually flexible, and opens out into a cone shape to amplify its voice.

Its main signature characteristic is the ability to mimic the roars and cries of other creatures, calling other monsters to its vicinity when threatened. The Qurupeco then uses dance-like displays similar to the mating dances of real tropical birds to give itself and other local monsters stat boosts, as well as enraging and/or charming other large monsters into attacking Hunters (and not the Qurupeco). Finally it has the ability to attack using a 'fire clap' where it spits a highly flammable mucus whilst simultaneously igniting it by banging two flintstone-like wing claws together.

Qurupeco is often regarded as one of the most difficult low rank monsters to fight despite its early appearance in Monster Hunter Tri and 3G. This is attributed to its ability to call other large monsters into the fight as well as being the first large monster encountered that uses strong elemental attacks (in this case fire).

Qurupeco can call a huge range of both small and large monsters to aid it including Jaggi, Rhenoplos, Ludroth, Melynx, Great Jaggi, Rathian, Rathalos, Royal Ludroth, Barroth, Deviljho and Diablos. Summoned monsters will initially be neutral towards Qurupeco and sometimes will even attack it if provoked.

In Monster Hunter 3G a sub-species of Qurupeco known as Crimson Qurupeco was introduced. Crimson Qurupeco is slightly larger and mainly red coloured rather then green. Its unique attacks use the thunder element rather then fire, and it can 'thunder clap' in the same way as the regular Qurupeco fire claps. It can also cause a bright flash to blind hunters in a similar manner to a Flash Bomb.
