The Dalish elves are wanderers that inhabit the woods and go wherever their Halla lead them. Dalish Elves try to hold onto what little knowledge of their past they have. They are skilled with bows and many are very close to the earth, able to understand the fauna and sentient flora. Part of their tradition is to heavily tattoo their faces with ink made from their own blood. They bury their dead in the earth and plant a tree over the grave.
They were once enslaved by humans thousands of years ago and the ones that were abandoned their traditions and gods for those of the humans. Those that remained free today wander, having lost their homelands and traditions. Because of this the Dalish tend to be very hostile to anyone not of their people, often killing on sight. City elf mages fleeing the Circle of Migi are among the very few that the Dalish will allow to join their clans. This has led to the false impression by humans that the Dalish are uncivilized, savage, and lack moral.
