User Summary

Asari are a mono-gender (all female) race, that very closely resemble human women with a purple, blue, pinkish, or teal (rare) skin color. Some asari have facial markings, which are unique color patterns that vary for every asari. In the place of head hair, asari possess rigid semi-flexible, cartilage based scalp crests that grow into shape. Asari have a robust cellular regenerative system; though they do not heal faster than other species. They are native to the planet Thessia and are often considered the most powerful and respected sentient species in the galaxy, and are known for their elegance, diplomacy, and biotic aptitude. Asari blood is purple.

Uniquely, the asari are known to be perceived as attractive to many other species. Many claim the asari most resemble their own race, likely focusing on characteristics their species shares with the asari such as body shape for humans, skin color for salarians, or head fringe for turians. Mordin Solus postulates that the mechanism behind the asari's cross-species attraction may be neurochemical in nature. The asari possess maternal instincts and have millennia-long lifespans with the ability to reproduce with a partner of any gender or species, gives them a conservative yet convivial attitude toward other races. An asari provides two copies of her own genes to her offspring, which is always an asari, regardless of the species or sex of the "father", and in the case that the offspring is of two asari, the father is the one who does not give birth. The second set of genes is altered in a unique process called melding, also known as the joining. since the asari began encountering other sentient species, non-asari mates have become preferred for the diversity they provide.

Trivia:

- All asari are natural biotics, however some choose not to develop their biotic power. Though choosing not to develop their biotic powers precludes an asari from military service, there is no social stigma attached to the decision.

- All permanent asari squad members have been purebloods.

- Asari is another name for Osiris, the Egyptian god of the Middle Kingdom.

- Siari, the mainstream asari religion, bears some resemblance to the religious beliefs of the Minbari from Babylon 5. Both religions hold that the universe is itself conscious, and each individual being is part of the greater conscious whole.

- As stated on page 21 of The Art of Mass Effect, the asari were created to fill the "green alien girls" trope, which was made popular by Star Trek: The Original Series.

- In The Art of the Mass Effect Universe, asari architecture is compared to the work of Santiago Calatrava.

- According to Associate Art Director Matt Rhodes, the fringe of the asari was originally designed as a hair style with subsequent concepts turning into the current version.

- According to Mordin Solus, offspring of asari-vorcha matings are allergic to dairy products.
