User Summary
Horses are an odd-toed ungulate mammal that humans began to domesticate around 4000 BC and it is believed their domestication had become widespread by 3000 BC. Most horses are domesticated but some domesticated populations are known to live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses like the Tarpan (extinct) and Przewalski's horse. Horses vary widely in and have an extensive specialized vocabulary to describe anatomy, life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.
They are typically used as a beast of burden for transportation or carrying goods. Sometimes they are used as a food source or their skin used for leather. On rare occasions they may be armored or decorated for use in battle or shows. Horses may also assist their owners/masters in combat directly or by virtue of their speed, strength, and vantage point give an advantage over an opponent.
