User Summary
Assassin's Creed is a franchise of alternate history games created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond, and Corey May. The Assassin's Creed video game franchise depicts a fictional millennia-old struggle between the Order of Assassins, who fight for peace and free will, and the Knights Templar, who desire peace through order and control. The series features historical fiction, science fiction, and fictional characters intertwined with real-world historical events and historical figures.
A new story and occasionally new time periods are introduced in each entry, with the gameplay elements also evolving. There are three overarching story arcs in the series. The first five main games follow Desmond Miles, a descendant of several important Assassins throughout history, who uses a machine called the Animus to relive his ancestors' memories and find powerful artifacts called Pieces of Eden while also attempting to prevent a catastrophic event, referencing the 2012 phenomenon, said to wipe out humanity by the end of 2012. Assassin initiates and employees of Abstergo (a company used as a front by the modern-day Templars) record genetic memories using the Helix software, helping the Templars and Assassins find new Pieces of Eden in the modern world.
The Divide
Assassin's Creed has seen a major shift in gameplay focus and features over the years that has divided the community. The newest game releases are so different from where the series started, that they are often group into two categories:
Classic: The series roots; emphasizes story and assassinations in a small world with lots of climbable objects. Sword fighting is more grounded and there is conflict with Templars.
Modern: Starting with the 'big 3' (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla), the games have gone open world and downplayed story, climbing, and assassinations. The focus is on RPG stats, decision making, and combat is more forgiving. The established lore is largely ignored or altered.
The series has also been criticized for yearly releases, instead of the usual 3 to 4 year gap common in the industry. The tight time crunch forces the developers to re-use assets, new features and stories can not be given the time they need to develop, and exotic or more varied locales are less likley to be explored. They steady stream of frequent, often similar, games has led to fan burnout in the series.
