Description Edit | History

PlayStation TV (abbreviated to PS TV), known in Japan and other parts of Asia as the PlayStation Vita TV or PS Vita TV, is a microconsole, and a non-handheld variant of the PlayStation Vita handheld game console.

Instead of featuring a display screen, the console connects to a television via HDMI. Users can play using a DualShock 3 or DualShock 4 controller, although due to the difference in features between the controller and the handheld, certain games are not compatible with PS Vita TV, such as those that are dependent on the system's microphone, camera, or gyroscopic features.

Notes:

  • Certain Vita games are not compatible with the PlayStation TV, most notably those that are dependent on the Vita's microphone, camera, or gyroscopic features.
  • The original PlayStation Vita (PCH-1000) series already has an upscaler that supports up to 1080i resolution, but does not support video output like the PlayStation TV does. The in-built scaler was removed from later PlayStation Vita (PCH-2000) series models.
  • The PlayStation TV can stream content from video services such as Hulu and Niconico, and games from the PlayStation 4 to a separate TV connected to PS Vita TV.

Essential items to buy in conjunction with the console:

Storage: PSVita Card

The 1GB of internal storage won’t last you very long, especially if you’re looking to buy your games digitally. You’re going to want a PSVita memory Card (4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 GB) to expand your storage, and the PlayStation TV only works with proprietary PSVita Cards; the same ones sold for regular Vita's. These cards are expensive, costing as much as or more than a new game release (around $60+).

Controller: DualShock 3 or DualShock 4

The PlayStation TV does not come with a controller and requires one. The DualShock 3 (PlayStation 3 controller) and DualShock 4 (PlayStation 4 controller) are both compatible with the PlayStation TV.

Common problems/faults with the console:

  • Vita games have to have been "whitelisted" by the developer/publisher to work on the PlayStation TV. This has stopped 30+ compatible titles from being playable on the PlayStation TV. A whitelist hack is available as a work-around.
