The PlayStation 2 (abbreviated PS2) is a sixth-generation video game console. It is the successor to the PlayStation and the predecessor to the PlayStation 3. Its was released on March 4, 2000 in Japan, October 26, 2000 in North America, and on November 24, 2000 in Europe. Its primary competitors were Sega's Dreamcast, Microsoft's Xbox, and the Nintendo GameCube.

As of November 21, 2011 the PlayStation 2 has sold over 150+ million units making it the best-selling console to date. Sony stated that 10,828 titles have been released for the system and that 1.52 billion titles have been sold since launch. The PlayStation 2 remained in production until January 4, 2013.

Region Locking:

PlayStation 2 consoles are region locked and will only play games with a matching region code. A console's region can be identified by the final digit in it's model number.

0,3 - NTSC:J - Japan, Asia
1 - NTSC:U/C - North America
2 - PAL - Europe, Oceania

Similarly, DVD movie playback is also region locked, following standard DVD region codes.

Lawsuit:

On July 16, 2002 a class action lawsuit was filed against Sony Computer Entertainment in the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo. The lawsuit addressed consumer reports of inappropriate "no disc" error messages and other problems associated with playing DVDs and CDs on the PlayStation 2.

Sony settled the lawsuit by compensating the affected gamers with $25 USD, a free game from a specified list, and reduced cost for repair or replacement at SCEA’s discretion.
