The Nintendo 3DS is the successor to the popular Nintendo DS.
It retains the dual-screen functionality however the upper screen now has a 3.5 inch widescreen display and has 3D capabilities. The 3D works without the player needing the wear glasses and there is a slider to adjust the amount of 3D effect the player wants. The lower screen retains its touch-screen capabilities. The system has more powerful graphics capabilities.
A "slide pad" has been added as a control option above the D-pad for analog control that works like a control stick on Nintendo's other platforms. A motion sensor and gyro sensor have also been added.
Nintendo of America president Reggis Fils-Aime has stated that the 3DS "will launch in all of our major markets by March 31, 2011."
