User Summary

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) was founded and started rating games in the year 1994. It is a self-regulatory organization that assigns age and content ratings and enforces industry-adopted advertising guidelines for computer and video games in the United States and Canada.

AO for Adult Only: Games that contain content that may be unsuitable for people under 18 years of age. The content can feature strong prolonged scenes of intense violence or graphic sexual content and nudity that exceeds what the "Mature" rating can accommodate. The ESRB has rarely issued the "Adults Only" rating and it has attracted a negative stigma among the video game industry. AO-rated games cannot be published for major video game console platforms and most retailers do not stock games bearing this rating.

In addition to the letter-based rankings, official ESRB ratings include an appropriate Content descriptor of potentially objectionable content. Those associated with a AO rating are:

Content descriptor
Definition
Intense Violence
Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict. May involve extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death.
Sexual Violence
Depictions of rape or other violent sexual acts.
Strong Sexual Content
Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity.
