"Source: User Submission with a quote This series began on the arcade with Killer Instinct (KI) and was advertised as using 'Ultra 64' hardware. Ultra 64 was the project code name for Nintendo's N64 console that was released during what is often referred to as the '3rd generation' of consoles (the post SNES/Mastersystem generation that saw N64, Playstation and Sega Saturn, and, to some extent, Dreamcast competing for market share). At the time of the arcade release Killer Instinct was competing with Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II within its genre. KI was known for it's lengthy combos and then unique button chaining system.
The popularity of this 2D fighter at the arcades led to a port to the Super Nintendo. There were some differences between the games, as detailed by their respective release entries here at BGG. Killer Instinct 2 was released some years later on the N64. Rumours of more games in the series have been rich and varied, having only their baseless inaccuracy in common. "On March 16, 2010, Kenn Lobb announced that they are not working on Killer Instinct 3 and that they may bring Killer Instinct back someday.""
