Falcon was one of the premier military flight simulators of it's time. In this series, you fly the F-16 fighter jet on many missions. It was one of the first simulators to provide head-to-head player competition by linking computers together and simulated real pilot maneuvers in it's AI.
Falcon has been a commercially sold title from 1987 till the discontinuation of Falcon 4.0
in December 1999. After that, several communities took over, modding and patching the latest game, Falcon 4.0. Eventually this led to 3 different Flightsims which are still available in 2011:
- FreeFalcon, a freeware standalone game,
- OpenFalcon, a freeware upgrade for Falcon 4.0 and
- Falcon 4.0: Allied Force, a commercial release
This makes the code used in the Falcon games belong to the oldest still used in active games.
Though the series focus is on a realistic simulation of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, other planes are flyable within several titles of this series.
