VGA-Planets was released in 1992 by Tim Wisseman. Since then, this multiplayer game has evolved enormously. In it's core it's a 4X strategy game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate) where the players win (unless other victory conditions are agreed on) by eliminating fellow players. Players operate fictional Space races (mostly based on existing TV series and movies).
VGA-Planets 3 was a worldwide played 11 player DOS game. But wishes of fans to do fleet battles (in stead of 1 on 1 ship battles only) and the creation of new playable races led to the release of VGA-P 4 for Windows.
VGA Planets is still being developed, with a VGA Planets Nu being the web browser version of VGA Planets 3. VGA Planets 4 has also been released, but because several core mechanisms have been altered (AI, fleet battles, player designed races, economy system changed and more), it deserves it's own entry as a video game, rather than being a new release of VGA Planets (3). VGA Planets 5 is under development as of end 2010
