History of Characters on VGG

This page is meant to serve as a brief overview of the history of character pages on VGG. Characters are a field unique to VGG, and they have gone through several changes. Hopefully this otherwise obscure info will prove useful or at least mildly entertaing.

2010 VGG is launched. A version of the series/franchise field is modified to suit characters.
Late 2010 Versions were added to character entries. Characters submitted prior to this did not have versions. Some older character pages in the database are still linked to games without any versions.
2012 Character versions up to this point were based around appearance, costumes, skins, abilities, and so on. It was messy, hard to find relevant data and no one could agree on what changes warranted a new version. The version rules were changed to, more or less, what they are now - 1 version per game. With this change, the character database become much more manageable.
