Representative Image RSS Feed

Each game may have a "representative image". This is the default image that will be displayed (in thumbnail form) during searches and when the game appears in lists, gallery view, collections, and is the image that will appear at the top of the game entry page. The image used is the one deemed to be of the best quality and the best able to represent the item. New 'rep images' are proposed by community members (you) and either approved or declined by the community through popular vote via GeekMod. If a proposed image is declined it cannot be proposed as a representative image again. What constitutes an appropriate "representative image" has been an issue of some contention (see Representative Images and What Makes a Good Representative Image?).

The preferred accepted representative images are:

Board Game A flat box front of the earliest English edition still in print, which in almost all cases will be the most recent English-language edition of a game. If a flat box front is not available, sometimes a 3D view of the game box is used, or components laid out in a recognizable manner even when viewed as a thumbnail.
RPG A front cover of the most recent English edition, where available.
Video Game A box cover of the first North American release, where available. If a box is not available, a screenshot of the title or main menu screen may be used.
Company The official logo.
Series/Franchise The official logo.
Character An image that best represents the character; preferably a full body image if available.

All representative images should be properly cropped and clean with good color contrast. They should have transparency where appropriate.

How to propose a rep image:

The process was changed recently and we are in the middle updating the wiki page with images but for now:

1. Open the image
2. Click on "Add a link" (or the pencil icon at the bottom right of the page).
3. Click on "Propose representative image"
4. The popup will appear with a list showing all entries/versions to which the image is linked and where it's not set as a representative image.
5. Select the appropriate linked item.
6. Leave a note for the moderator, if needed (these actually go to Geekmod to be approved, not to admins, so it won't take effect immediately)

How to propose a new background image:

The banner (background) image for a game page cannot be proposed directly and there is no way to manually change it. The most thumbed image, that is not already the representative image, is chosen by default. Users can help to select a background image by thumbing pics in the game gallery.

  • The system will not select an image from the "creative" category.
  • It also has to be landscape in nature.

How to propose a new rep image for a version:

3. Click on "Add Version Link"
4. A popup will appears listing all versions. Select the appropriate version and then click on the 'save' button.
